Why did my Samsung Galaxy S4 suddenly deleted my pictures?

i am currently in the middle of a trip and am taking lots of pictures. unfortunately, my sd card was nearly full and so i decided to save the pictures of the device memory, around 3gb of free space, instead.
I had around 200 something photos saved on the device memory when the tragedy occured. I recorded some videos which roughly sum uo to 2-3 gb. Then a few moments later i found only 18 pictures on the same folder. all the other 200 something pictures are no where to be found!!!!!
my only conclusion is that galaxy s4 replaced the pictures with the videos instead of warning me about low memory!
fortunately, more than 60 percent of the pics are synced to my dropbox folder. But, i lost around 50 very memorable pictures. i would really like to get them back at any cost!
what bothers me more is the fact that i can not find out why my phone deleted those pictures. and i can not stand knowing that the pictures i take are not safe before they can be uploaded to dropbox!
as i mentioned earlier, i am in the middle of a trip and i can only get access to wifi in a few places so that my pictures can be synced to dropbox.

please help me out with this!

A similar thing is happening on my galaxy S4.
After I take a photo I HAVE to immediately view the photo with the camera app. If I don't then viewing it later results in just a black screen. This means that I cannot take more than 1 picture at a time. The photo is unreadable on any other system (computer, wife's phone etc.).
My phone will eventually delete the photos by itself (after a few days on average).

I lost some pretty precious pictures of my son before I figured out what was going on.

It all started after I upgraded to Android 5.x accidentally. I tryed to ignore it all long as possible. But persistent, and annoying notifying that i have to update won out in the end.

As a once flagship device, Samsung should have made damn sure that they got their upgrade of the S4 to Android 5 correct.

I will NEVER buy a Samsung device again.

Same thing happened on your so Samsung. ..I won't be using them again...

Maybe you can check your backup in Google+ or KIES, if you can't find any backup, you had better not take photo with your phone until you recover photos from Samsung Galaxy S4. You can use Android data recovery programs to get back you lost photos. More: http://www.card-data-recovery.com/phone/samsung-galaxy-s4-data-recovery.html

I'v stuck into the trouble similar to you before. That was quite strange, but I sent my phone to repair very soon after that because I was afraid that any further wrong doing would cause the pictures permanently get lost. Luckily, I got them back but the cost is pretty high. So I won't suggest you recovery services. I hear that one can recover the deleted/lost photos by recovery software. There is a tutorial on how to recover deleted data from Samsung phone, maybe you can refer to it. Good Luck.

Hi Bibek. It's the first time I've heard of phone deleting photos automatically. You must report this to Samsung so they can look into your issue and prevent this from happening .

As for retrieval of your photos, if they are saved in your memory card, there's a good chance you can retrieve them. Check the link below for instructions. Let me know if it works for you. Good luck!
