Acer's Iconia B1-A71: Low-Priced Android Tablet Now Official
Android Community

Acer's mythical $100 tablet failed to become a reality at the CES although the Taiwanese device-maker did unveil a Jelly Bean tablet that's still 25% cheaper than the top budget tablets. The Iconia B1-A71 runs on Google's latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system, has access to the Google Play Store, and features relatively modest specs: a 7-inch WSVGA display with resolution of 1024 x 600, a dual-core processor, a 0.3 megapixel front-facing camera, and no rear-facing camera. Confirming pricing of "less than $150" for the Iconia B1, Acer is the first popular brand that's ushering in a sub-$150 tablet.

What Else You Need To Know

  • The Iconia B1 sports a 1.2GHz dual-core Mediatek (MTK 8317T) processor, 512MB of RAM, 8GB of internal memory with a microSD expansion slot adding up to 32GB of extra space when required, Wireless 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, and Google's latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system.
  • The top-selling selling Android tablets -- the 7-inch Amazon Kindle Fire HD, and the Google Nexus 7 -- are priced at $199. The price of the original Kindle Fire, which has similar specs as the Iconia B1, has been cut to $159 with the release of the second-generation Kindle Fire models.

On the downside, though, the Iconia B1 is said to have a mediocre TN display with poor viewing angles. The pixel density is as much as on the iPad mini so we would not really hold it for a downside given that Acer’s tablet costs less than half Apple’s 7.9-incher.

Regardless of your reasoning to purchase though, the price is relatively low and the specs seems to match. Aside from the hardware goodies, this tablet will have access to the Google Play store which really just means easy access to the more than 750,000 available apps as well as music, movies, books, magazines and more.
