Acer Readying More Low-Cost Android Tablets
Other

Robust demand for Acer's $150 Iconia B1-A71 tablet has enticed the Taiwanese device-maker to broaden its range of low-cost Android tablets, Acer's President for Greater China, Linxian Lang, confirmed. Acer is reportedly readying 8-inch and 10-inch versions of the affordable tablet for the third quarter. The 8-incher is expected to be priced at $199 while the 10-inch model would have a competitive $239 price tag. Both tablets would be running on MediaTek MT6589 quad-core Cortex A-7 chip, although they'd unlikely have high-resolution displays or carbon-based materials given the low price-point.

What Else You Need To Know

  • Acer sold 7,000 units of the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean-running 7-inch B1 tablet in Taiwan for the first 10 days and expects monthly global shipments of 400,000 units.
  • The top-selling selling Android tablets in the market today -- the 7-inch Amazon Kindle Fire HD, and the Google Nexus 7 -- are priced at $199.

That isn’t a bad idea, because while others like Apple and Samsung duke it out over the high-end tablet crowd, Acer can make its tablets appeal to more mainstream users. - Eric Abent, Android Community

If you want a little speculation on the specifications; we might see a quad-core in the largest tablet, rather than the 1.2GHz Mediatek dual-core processor currently in the 7-inch model. We could also see the RAM memory pushed up to a 1GB in the larger tablets, but other than that things are likely to stay pretty much the same to keep the prices reasonable.
