Acer Readying Super-Cheap 7-Inch Tablet
Android Community

Acer aims to replicate the success of popular non-iPad tablets with Iconia Tabs priced as low as $99. Budget tablets Amazon Kindle Fire HD and the Google Nexus 7 have been able to bite into the market leading 9.7-inch iPad's market share with 7-inch tablets that are priced 60 percent cheaper than the $499 iPad. The Wall Street Journal has confirmed that Acer in 2013 is releasing budget tablets in emerging markets rather than the U.S. But the device could still see a U.S. release as the Acer Iconia B1 - which runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean but features low-end specs - was recently submitted to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission for clearance.

What Else You Need To Know

  • The Acer Iconia B1 features a 7-inch touchscreen, 1024 x 600 resolution, a MediaTek dual-core 1.2 GHz processor with PowerVR SGX 531 graphics, paltry 512 MB of RAM, 8 GB of storage, a microSD slot for additional storage, GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and (possibly) mobile data connectivity.
  • The Google Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire HD, which have an introductory price of $199, are the best selling Android tablets.
