Leaked Pricing: Acer's Windows 8 Tablet Not Cheaper Than iPad 3
The Next Web

Acer previously balked at reports that Microsoft will be matching the Google Nexus 7 and the Amazon Kindle Fire's $199 price tag for its own Microsoft Surface RT tablet. Acer has not officially released pricing for its Windows 8 tablets but leaked details from New Zealand confirm that they won't come cheap. The Wi-Fi only version of the Acer Iconia Tab W510 with 64 GB storage will be retailed at $999 NZ (that's US$712 stripped out of NZ tax). Note that the entry-level 16 GB version iPad is priced at only $499 and the 64 GB version of the market leading tablet comes at $699.

What Else You Need To Know

  • The Acer Iconia Tab W510 features a 10.1-inch IPS display with 1366 x 768 resolution, Intel Atom processor, microSD, micro-USB and HDMI ports, Dolby Home Theater-powered sound system, and the full-blown Windows 8 operating system.
  • The detachable keyboard dock, which extends the battery life of the device to 18 hours, will cost an additional $200 NZ (about US$160).
  • Microsoft's Steve Ballmer said that Windows 8 tablets would be priced at "$300 to about $700 or $800."

What are they thinking? Tablet pricing is relatively set in the market, with the lower price points staked out, along with the higher end price tiers. Surely Acer and Asus know that they are trending towards the stratosphere of cost to consumer?

If there’s any good news to come out of this, it’s that Acer doesn’t appear to be charging as much for its keyboard dock as Asus is.
