Alleged Leak Points to 6.44-inch Sony Xperia Phone
Into Mobile

Sony has lined up the 4-core chip-powered and waterproof 10.1-inch Xperia Tablet Z, as well as the top-end 5-inch Xperia Z and ZL smartphones as part of its bid to revitalize its mobile electronics business. The Japanese electronics giant is not done yet. A new display component posted to the Chinese-language Digi-wo forum suggests that Sony has a 6.44-inch 1080p, full HD device in the works. This device would compete with the likes of Galaxy Note 2 phablet or the 7-inch Google Nexus 7 tablet, depending on what type of device the purported screen gets attached to. If indeed this ends up in shelves or at next month's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, a 6.44-inch Xperia smartphone would be the largest in its class.

What Else You Need To Know

  • Phandroid's Quentyn Kennemer says that the alleged component leak doesn't make room for a speaker grill and thus Sony could be preparing a media player instead.
  • Sony's Kaz Hirai in early January said the company would be releasing high-end smartphones instead of feature phones over the course of the year.

Would Sony launch a 6.44-inch smartphone or media player?

At this size we would be more likely to believe that the device will come to us as a media player. It would certainly seem to fit Sony’s domain as the company still has a lingering Walkman brand it could look to revitalize.

Sony Prepping Galaxy Note 2 Competitor?

If that is indeed true, it would appear that Sony might be cooking up a serious competitor to the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 which features a screen size of 5.5-inches, much bigger than most smartphones on the market. In fact, it’s so big, the device has been called a ‘phablet’ rather than a smartphone.
