Amazon announced that Kindle Fire HD 8.9" is now available in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Japan.
Up until now Amazon has offered only the smaller 7-inch Kindle Fire HD model outside the U.S.
Amazon also announced it is able to lower the price of 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD in the U.S., with the Wi-Fi version now starting at only $269 and the 4G version starting at $399.
The device comes with a 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution, 254ppi, putting the tablet up there with some of the sharpest devices around, although access to apps and content would be via Amazon Appstore instead of Google Play Store.

- The Amazon Appstore claims to have 23 million movies, TV shows, songs, magazines, books, and audiobooks.
- The 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD comes with a forked version of Android Ice Cream Sandwich, stereo speakers offering Dolby Digital Plus sound, 1.5GHz dual-core OMAP4470 processor, and 16GB of storage.
- No other cellular contract-free tablet with LTE competes on price against the $399 Kindle Fire 8.9" although the device comes with advertising, or what Amazon calls "with special offers."
