Apple may be up-sizing this year's new iPhone and iPad. Reports point out that the beta release of the upcoming iOS 6.1 makes references to compatibility with 128 GB iOS devices. Apple has doubled the maximum available capacity of iOS devices every two years, with 2011's iPhone 4S doubling the on-board storage from 32GB to 64GB. Apple is rumored to be working on an iPhone 5S that keeps the iPhone 5's design but touts a faster processor and an improved camera. Apple released the iPad mini and iPad 4 in November but 9to5Mac's Mark Gurman points out that leaked SKU codes indicate that Apple's preparing an iPad 4 with 128GB of NAND flash storage.
What Else You Need To Know
- Released in September for $649 contract-free and $199 on a two-year contract, the iPhone 5 features a high-resolution, 4-inch screen, LTE support, and an A6 processor that offers twice the performance, and is 20% lighter than its predecessor.
- Cheaper by $179 than a full-sized iPad but still pricier by $130 than the Google Nexus 7 or the Amazon Kindle Fire HD, the iPad mini sports a 7.85-inch screen, a non-Retina display of 1024 x 768 pixels, and the same hardware as the iPad 2.
- The iPad 4 features a new Apple designed A6X chip that offers up to twice the CPU performance of previous model and some marginal improvements over its predecessor.
