Apple's iPad is three years old today. Although hit at launch for being just an oversized iPod, the iPad became the fastest growing consumer product ever and has been blamed for the decline in demand for traditional PCs. Apple has sold 67.7 million iPads since 2010 (plus 8 million more this quarter) and has released four versions of the 9.7-inch iPad and the first generation 7.9-inch iPad mini. Indicating that the launch of the fifth-generation full-sized iPad and the second-generation iPad mini could be near, Walmart is just selling the iPad mini for only $299 (from the original $329 price tag), and Best Buy is selling the 16 GB iPad 3 for only $315 (from $449).
What Else You Need To Know
- In 2010, many predicted the doom of the iPad, including Google's Eric Schmidt, who said, "You might want to tell me the difference between a large phone and a tablet."
- Last week, Apple started offering a refurbished version of the 16GB Wi-Fi iPad mini for $299, which is just $30 cheaper than the brand new model.
