Apple Maps Users Get Lost in Australian Wilderness
GigaOM

Apple's decision to replace Google's mapping service with an error-plagued native app is causing motorists to stray in dangerous terrain in Australia. Local police in Mildura, Australia, have issued warnings after faulty directions from Apple Maps placed a number of travelers in a potentially life threatening situation. Apple Maps shows the city of Mildura as being in the middle of Murray Sunset National Park, about 70 kilometers from where it should be.

What Else You Need To Know

  • Some of the travelers rescued by police have been stranded for up to 24 hours without food and water, and walked long distances through dangerous terrain to get reception.
  • Apple Maps is a key addition to iOS 6, which is the built-in operating system of the iPhone 5. Owners of older devices who stuck with iOS 5 still have access to the Google Maps app.
  • Apple CEO Tim Cook in September formally apologized for issues surrounding Apple Maps and recommended that iPhone and iPad owners instead use Bing, Google, or Nokia maps in the meantime.
