Apple vs. Samsung Turns to Smart Watches

Reports in recent weeks claim that Apple is unveiling an iOS-based "iWatch" before the end of the year.

Now archrival Samsung is confirming that it's working on a smart watch device.

Samsung Mobile EVP Lee Young Hee told Bloomberg News that the Korean company has been preparing the watch product for "so long". 

He didn't confirm if the device would be running Android or whether it is a standalone device or an accessory to tie into their popular Galaxy line of phones.

Some companies have unveiled smart watch tech in the market past have found modest success. 

Already at war in courtrooms and in the market, top smartphone makers Samsung and Apple are now in a race to take a smart watch mainstream.

  • Samsung has patents related to wrist watch tech spanning nearly a decade and released the SPH-WP10 watch-phone way back in 2009.
  • Rumors of a new Samsung watch took off in February when mockups of a device — allegedly named Galaxy Altius — surfaced on a Korean messaging board.
  • 100 Apple engineers are allegedly working on a smart watch that's able to make calls, check caller ID, relay map coordinates, display notifications from the user's phone on the watch's display, and provide health-related data through a built-in pedometer and heart-rate monitor.
