ASUS's 2nd-Gen. Nexus 7 in May; Intel Phone in June
Other

A follow-up to the Google Nexus 7 could be unveiled in May, most likely at Google's I/O conference, according to DigiTimes, citing an unnamed source from the upstream supply chain. The second-generation Nexus 7 from Google and ASUS will feature improved hardware and will cost $249, which is $50 more than the entry-level 7-incher. DigiTimes says that while the original Nexus 7 used the Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, the new tablet will make use of a Qualcomm chipset due to the lack of 4G LTE on Nvidia's chip.

What Else You Need To Know

  • Aside from the second-generation Nexus 7, Google is expected to unveil at the I/O event the Android 5.0 operating system and subsidiary Motorola's X Phone.
  • After the Nexus 7, ASUS will reportedly release a high-end smartphone with an Intel chipset and 5 to 5.5-inch touchscreen in June at the earliest.
  • The Intel-powered handset will be Asus' first foray into standalone smartphones as the Asus Padfone released last year had a companion dock and keyboard.
  • Nvidia shipped over 10 million Tegra 3 chipsets for 2012 tablets, with 6 million units supplied to Google for the first- generation Nexus 7.
