ASUS has confirmed that it will hold a press-conference at the Mobile World-Congress in Barcelona, Spain on February 25. Amid the massive success of the ASUS-made Google Nexus 7, ASUS is expected to unveil another budget tablet. Rumors point to a 7-inch Fonepad from ASUS. While the Nexus 7 had a quad-core Tegra 3 processor and rubber back, the Fonepad will have a single-core Intel Atom processor and an aluminum body (like the iPad and iPad mini). If confirmed by ASUS, the Fonepad will join the $199 Nexus 7 and the $149 MeMo Pad 7" will join ASUS's portfolio of low-cost tablets.
What Else You Need To Know
- The Fonepad (model number ME371MG) reportedly sports an Intel Atom Z2420 single-core processor clocked at up to 2GHz, 7-inch IPS LCD display with 1280 x 800 resolution, internal storage starting at 8 GB plus a microSD card slot, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and 3MP and 1.2MP cameras.
- A low-cost Fonepad would allow Intel to finally penetrate the budget-tablet market as current Intel-powered tablets have been pricey (for example, Surface Pro starting at $899).
