Broadcom Readying Smaller, First LTE Chip
Engadget

Broadcom, maker of mobile processors and 3G modems, marked its first foray into the LTE market with its announcement of the BCM21892, a modem chip that supports faster LTE networks. The new modem, which is targeted for high-end mobile devices, supports advanced connectivity features, including voice calls over LTE, downloading speeds of up to 150Mps, and a carrier aggregation feature that lets carriers bond together different frequencies to improve data speeds. The improved performance won't require the extra bulk as this chip is 35% smaller than the leading competition (i.e. Qualcomm).

What Else You Need To Know

  • Smaller chips would allow the device-makers to make room for other features or make the devices thinner.
  • The new chip touts a world-band radio that can support virtually any designated 3GPP LTE frequency band and combination, which would allow networks for 4G LTE roaming.
  • Broadcom will show off its 4G chips at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, slated for February 25th to 28th. They expect mass production in 2014.
