Dell Banks on Build Quality, Industrial Design in Crowded Tablet Race
Mashable

Dell is joining the tablet hybrids bandwagon with the Windows-running XPS 10 and XPS Duo 12. The Dell XPS 10, a tablet with a keyboard dock, is an ARM-powered Windows RT device, is thin and light, has a 10-inch Full HD display, and boasts of 22 hours of battery life. The Dell XPS DUO 12, 12-inch touchscreen notebook with a swiveling display, is expected to have Ultrabook like specs, and runs on the full blown version of Windows 8. The XPS Duo 12 has top of the line specs: build made of premium materials carbon fiber (back), magnesium alloy (screen bezel) and Corning Gorilla Glass (touch-screen), a crisp and bright 1080P HD display, powerful Intel Ivy Bridge processors, and backlit keyboards.

What Else You Need To Know

  • Dell only allowed IFA 2012 participants to test the new hybrids for a limited time and did not divulge the devices' full specs.
  • No information on price or availability has been provided. But Windows 8 devices are expected to be in shelves late October, the official release date of the new OS.

Dell isn’t talking specific specifications yet, which could be a deal breaker. The original Duo was woefully underpowered with a dual-core Atom processor, though it’s fair to say that Intel has upped its mobile processor game in the intervening time. - Chris Davies, SlashGear
Looking like a much plusher sequel to the Inspiron Duo, the flip screen computer-come-tablet runs a full version of Windows 8. Made out of machined aluminium and carbon fibre, like most of the rest of Dell's XPS range, it is looking like a top of the line piece of kit. - Hunter Skipworth, Pocket-lint

Up front is an HD touchscreen, while Dell has squeezed both microUSB and microSD connections into the 10mm thick slate. We’re guessing on Bluetooth and WiFi inside, and hoping that Dell does road warriors a service by including integrated 3G/4G options.

Usability-wise, from a few minutes playing with it and putting it through its paces, the trackpad also really, really good. It's miles ahead of what previous XPS machines' trackpads could do. Dell's been making great machines with bad trackpads for a while; it seems to have fixed that big hurdle.

The LCD screen is bright, crisp and vivid – again, Dell isn’t saying specifics, but it’s HD resolution and most likely an IPS panel, just as has been used on XPS ultrabooks – but we obviously couldn’t test touchscreen responsiveness.

Dell isn’t allowing people to properly play with the XPS Duo 12, and in fact the convertible ultrabook spent most of its time behind glass.

The carbon fibre back on the rear of the Duo 12 keeps it very light while the aluminium wrap ensures it feels like a premium product. In fact this is up there with the rest of Dell's XPS range, albeit with a rotating screen.

The XPS 10 is amazingly light without its keyboard attached, this is helped in part by the carbon fibre back. With keyboard it's a slightly heavier affair - but then it does help substantially with battery life, translating to a possible 22 hours.
