Mozilla has just rolled out a new version of Firefox for Android in order to add support for ARMv6-based devices with 800MHz processors and at least 512MB of RAM. The updated software should now work on over half a million new phones and tablets from the likes of Samsung, HTC, Motorola, LG, and white box device makers hailing from China and other parts of the world. The new software also adds hardware and software decoder support for h.264 video on Android 4.0 and 4.1. And as a bonus--for Jelly Bean users--it now offers Explore by Touch, a feature that lets the visually impaired browse the Web through speech, sounds, and vibrations.

That’s all the more reason for companies to start upgrading their hardware to modern versions of Android instead of letting their devices sit on whatever it was shipped with. Most won’t care to upgrade the many Gingerbread phones still in circulation, unfortunately.- Quentyn Kennemer, Phandroid
