Future iPads Won't Have Samsung's LCD Panels?
Other

Apple and Samsung are embroiled in patent litigation in over a dozen countries, are engaged in cutthroat competition in the smart phone and tablet market, but the Korean electronics giant continued to supply liquid crystal displays for the iPad and iPhone maker. The Korea Times, citing an unnamed senior Samsung source, reports that Samsung's display unit will completely cut ties with Apple because it's not making enough profit. Samsung will still manufacture processors for Apple's mobile devices but is no longer taking part in the design process, according to the report. But Samsung has told CNET that the report was completely false, and that "Samsung Display has never tried to cut the supply for LCD panels to Apple."

What Else You Need To Know

  • In August a jury in San Jose, California, found Samsung guilty of violating nearly every single claim of design and/or technology patent violations by the Galaxy Tab and Samsung smart phones and ordered Samsung to pay $1.049 billion. The ruling is under appeal.
  • This month, an appellate court in the UK ruled that Samsung did not infringe on Apple's design patents and ordered Apple to publicly apologize to Samsung in prominent news publications.

Apple reportedly moving chip production away from Samsung

Apple is interested in TSMC’s 20 nanometer processes – currently, Samsung develops the A-series chips inside the iPhone and the iPad with a 32 nanometer process, and moving to TSMC’s 20 nanometer process would promise chips that are more powerful and efficient. Unfortunately for Samsung, TSMC would become the sole provider of Apple’s chips, which means that Samsung would lose a pretty big customer once Apple begins looking elsewhere.

Apple is still under contract with Samsung, but as soon as the Cupertino-based company fulfills its obligations, it will move on to TSMC. This could mean disaster for other TSMC customers, who will be put on the back burner as the company works to produce chips in the quantities that Apple requires.
