Galaxy Note 3 to Have Octa CPU, 6-Inch Screen

The third generation of the Samsung Galaxy Note is debuting later this year with a gigantic display and much faster processor. The Korea Times reports that the successor to the Note 2 launched in August would have a 6.3-inch display with an Exynos 5 Octa processor. Samsung at the recently concluded Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas its Exynos 5 Octa, an eight-core chip that handles multiple tasks without any issue, spends up to 70% less battery life than current quad-core CPUs, and provides twice the 3D performance of anything currently in the market. Samsung has not announced a launch date for Galaxy Note 3.

 

What Else You Need To Know

  • Samsung, which manufactures key components of the iPad and iPhone, is reportedly pitching its Exynos processors to Huawei, ZTE and other Chinese smartphone makers in order to reduce reliance on Apple.
  • The Exynos 5 Octa packs four high-powered Cortex-A15 cores clocked at 1.8 GHz and four energy-efficient Cortex-A7 cores clockeda t 1.2GHz, switching cores depending on the computational horsepower needed.
  • Launched in August 2012, the Galaxy Note 2 sports a 5.55-inch screen with a 720p resolution display, and a 1.6 GHz quad-core Cortex-A9 processor.

The interesting part here, while the Note II already has stellar battery life, the battery life on the Note III could be even better. That comes due in part with the processor, which if you remember back to CES, was focused on efficiency. The Exynos 5 Octa will have a total of 8-cores broken down as four Cortex-A15 processors and four Cortex-A7 cores.

The Octa chip features two quad-core processors, one for high performance and one for power conservation. So, as many have said already, it should not be labeled as a true octa-core chip as the two are never running simultaneously. As for the Galaxy S4, which hasn’t been in the headlines too much yet, is still unspoken for in terms of what chipset we should expect.
