Analysts believe that Apple, as well as Google, will inevitably merge its operating systems for PCs and mobile devices, which combination would allow users to move and access content across any device regardless of the form factor. Not for Google's Android and Chrome in the near term. Google's Eric Schmidt told reporters in India that two OSes will remain separate products but said there could be more "commonality" between them.
What Else You Need To Know
- Android powers the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and is the top OS for mobile devices, while Chrome powers the Chromebook but is yet to find success in the market.
- At the India conference, an attendee, @scepticgeek, tweeted Schmidt as saying Android and Chrome would be "separate & independent for a long time."
- Schmidt's said at the Mobile World Congress way back in February 2011 that Chrome and Android would absolutely converge but he did say that they wouldn't force technology to merge when it's ready.
