Google Won't Open Own Retail Stores
Other

Excited to join hundreds of people waiting outside a flagship Google Store ahead of a launch of a new exciting Nexus tablet or smartphone? Not so fast. Google's Andy Rubin shot down rumors that Google intends to open up its own retail stores by the end of 2013. Rubin stated that thanks to the Internet and word of mouth, consumers need not go into a brick and mortar store and feel a product anymore. Experts have pointed out that physical stores could help consumers experience Google-made products first-hand, much like Apple's retail stores. But Rubin says Google's Nexus program is still relatively young, and not "far enough along to think about the necessity of having these things in a retail store."

What Else You Need To Know

  • Google rival Apple maintains 394 around 400 retail stores in 14 countries.
  • What Google could potentially display in its own retail stores are the Nexus devices, Chromebooks like the new Pixel, the upcoming Google Glass, and phones from its subsidiary Motorola.
