HTC Flyer Rumored to Re-Enter Market as Budget Tablet
Other

HTC is expected to launch new devices September 19th event in New York, after sending press invites titled "Join HTC to see what’s next". Android Authority says that HTC would be rejoining the tablet party with the second generation HTC Flyer, which would compete with the popular Google Nexus 7 and the Amazon Kindle Fire. The HTC Flyer 2 would have a 1280 x 768 pix resolution 7-inch display, a dual-core Snapdragon S4 chip, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on board, dual 3 MP/1 MP cameras, and 0.28 inches or 7.1 mm thick (only half of predecessor). The new device is expected to be released in the fourth quarter of this year.

What Else You Need To Know

  • The original 7-inch Flyer was launched at $499 -- same pricing as the market leading iPad -- but bombed.
  • The success of $200 tablets from Google and Amazon may have prompted HTC to try out the budget-tablet arena. The HTC Flyer 2 is expected to take the same price range as other budget tablets.
  • At the September 19th event, HTC is also rumored to unveil a 5-inch, quad-core "phablet" and/or new Windows Phone 8 models.

Other sources

I’m as baffled as you probably are by HTC’s decision to follow on the footsteps of a 2011 tablet that never really took off, but the Flyer 2’s existence has been confirmed by a “source in the know” close to Phone Arena, so it might not be just a made-up rumor. - Adrian Diaconescu, Android Authority
The camera, oddly, seems to be getting downgraded, moving from a 5/1.3-megapixel front/back arrangement to just three megapixels around back and one up front; that may be a cost-reducing decision. - Stephen Schenck, PocketNow

Is HTC preparing a budget-friendly Flyer 2 7-inch Jelly Bean tablet?

We did spot a mysterious unreleased 10-incher from HTC a few days ago, but we were ready to bet (as we are now) that the leaked tab was either a big fat fake, or some kind of concept never to become reality. What might just become reality however is a 7-inch HTC Flyer 2 aimed at going head-to-head with budget-conscious Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire, but probably with second-edition Fire(s) and the iPad Mini as well.

While the first Flyer was a bulky 13.2 millimeters thick, the Flyer 2 is said to shrink things down to just 7.1 millimeters, a nearly-fifty-percent reduction in thickness.

The previous Flyer had an appealing stylus and a special HTC Sense version adapted to pen use. I guess that these features will be upgraded and implemented as well.

HTC Flyer 2 tablet could be real after detailed specs emerge

The launch price of the original HTC Flyer was an extortionate £600, but if its successor is really going to take on the likes of the Nexus 7 it would need to be available at a similar cost - £199.
