Intel-Powered Tablets Woo Underserved Business Users
Other

Intel Corp. hosted an event where device makers like Samsung Electronics and Hewlett Packard and other device-makers unveiled new Intel-powered tablets and tablet-ultrabook hybrids running on Windows 8. Intel is the world's largest chipmaker for traditional PCs but has so far failed to gain any ground in the tablet market that's dominated by ARM-based chips. Intel said that its new Atom Z2760 processors, code named Clover Trail, tablets' lengthens battery life, and the Intel-powered Windows 8 tablets would also be able to run widely used PC-based software like Word and Excel. Intel hopes that the combination of a low power consuming processor with touch friendly Microsoft Corp Windows 8 software will win over enterprise customers which are underserved by the iPad and Android tablets.

What Else You Need To Know

  • Intel CEO Paul Otellini has reportedly told Taiwanese employees that Windows 8 is being released on Oct. 26 before it's actually ready.
  • Intel previously said that at least 20 Windows 8 tablets with Intel chips would be released.
  • Packaging the Windows 8 tablets as an alternative to the notebook would mean that device-makers need not compete in pricing with $200 budget-tablets like the Nexus 7 and the Amazon Kindle Fire.
  • The tablet market is currently dominated by Apple's iPad and tablets running on Google's Android operating system.

Intel details Clover Trail tablets: three weeks on standby, 10 hours of use, 'full' Windows 8 experience

Intel says that at least 20 different Clover Trail tablets are already in the works, and early price tags seem to be around the $799 mark -- a hefty demand for sure, but perhaps one worth paying for those who need full-fledged Windows 8 and true portability at the same time.

Windows 8 tablets won't be like Windows 8 Pro machines, however, so don't go expecting USB 3.0, or a guarantee of 1080p visuals (most Clover Trail devices we've seen are 1,366 x 768) or souped-up security -- the Atom Z2760 is very much an evolved Medfield processor, with similar silicon and firmware, rather than a shrunken laptop chip.
