Multiple Reports: iPad mini Finally Revealed October 23rd
Cell Phone Signal

Apple is unveiling a smaller, cheaper version to the iPad October 23rd, according to reports from Bloomberg, Reuters and AllThingsD, which all cited unnamed sources. The smaller iPad, dubbed the iPad mini, is expected to have a 7.85-inch display, a lower resolution than the iPad 3's highly touted 2048 x 1536 Retina resolution display, and a price tag below the $499 entry-level iPad 3. Late Apple founder Steve Jobs had said two years ago that the Cupertino, California-based company would never release a more compact version of the 9.7-inch iPad. The world's most valuable tech company is expected to send press invites Tuesday for the iPad mini launch.

What Else You Need To Know

  • Apple sold 17 million iPads in the quarter ended June 30, 2012, and a total of 84 million units since the original iPad was launched in 2010. Apple is the top seller of tablets.
  • The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple has ordered 10 million units of the iPad for the fourth quarter of the year. The 10 million units of the iPad mini ordered by Apple is double the roughly double the size of the order placed by Amazon for its Kindle Fire HD tablets in the same quarter.

That’s a Tuesday, not a Wednesday, so this is a bit of a break with recent tradition. It also happens to be just three days prior to the street date for Microsoft’s new Surface tablet. - John Paczkowski, AllThingsD
