Apple has confirmed an October 23rd media event that's widely expected to be the unveiling of the highly awaited iPad mini. Although the invites for the 10:00 a.m. PDT event at California Theatre in San Jose was short of details, the text -- “We’ve got a little more to show you." -- suggests that Apple CEO Tim Cook would be touting at miniature version of the iPad. The iPad mini is expected to have a 7.85-inch display, a brushed aluminum backside, a lower resolution than the 9.7-inch iPad 3's highly touted 2048 x 1536 Retina resolution display, and a price tag below the $499 entry-level iPad 3. Aside from the new tablet, Apple is expected to announce a new major version of iBooks at the event.

- Although late Apple founder Steve Jobs had said that Apple would never release a 7-inch iPad, the iPad mini has been in the rumor mill since late last year.
- The iPad mini would compete with $199 tablets Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire HD. Apple used to have a virtual monopoly of the tablet market but the success of the Android budget tablets has cut Apple's market share to below 60%.
