Apple has unveiled the iPad mini, Apple's first foray into the world of 7-inch tablets, a market currently dominated by the Google Nexus 7. The $199 Nexus 7 though is a full $130 cheaper than the iPad mini, has a quad-core Tegra 3 processor that tops the iPad's dual-core CPU, a higher 216 pixels-per-inch resolution, has NFC for contactless payments, and has a GPS missing in the iPad mini's WiFi only model. Notwithstanding the availability of budget tablets, Apple relies on brand loyalty and its ability to price products at a premium to secure its success in the competitive 7-inch tablet market. Apple's new slate also out-dos the ASUS-made Nexus 7 in terms of having a cellular or 4G LTE option, more storage choices (up to 64GB for iPad mini, just 16GB for Nexus 7), and having a rear camera.
What Else You Need To Know
- The iPad mini sports a 7.9-inch screen with 1024 x 768 resolution for a 163 ppi pixel density, dimensions of 200 x 134.7 x 7.2mm, a dual-core A5 processor, 16.3 Wh Li-Po battery that gives 10 hours, a 1.2MP front-facing FaceTime HD camera, and 5MP rear facing iSight camera, and a 4G LTE option.
- Available November 2nd, the Wi-Fi only iPad mini is priced at $329 (16GB of storage), $429 (32GB), and $529 (64GB). Models that connect with 3G and 4G cellular networks will ship mid-November and are priced at $459 (16GB), $559 (32GB) and $659 (64GB), respectively.
