The world is in for an exciting new mobile OS in the form of Sailfish, an open-source iOS and Android alternative put together by former Nokia employees in a new outfit called Jolla as an offshoot of the abandoned MeeGo OS. Jolla has signed its first carrier deal with Finland's DNA and is set on creating a multitude of devices with Sailfish, ranging from smartphones to tablets and even smart TVs. Sailfish looks to provide true and effortless multitasking along with several useful new features to its users in the future. The OS itself sure looks feature-rich based on the first demonstrations, but the type of hardware on which it will launch first still remains to be seen.
What Else You Need To Know
- Jolla continued the work that Nokia abandoned when it moved to start work on Microsoft's Windows Phone platform.
- Sailfish is based on Mer, a key ingredient in the old MeeGo project for all sorts of mobile devices.
