The 7-inch Kindle Fire HD is now available for purchase at Amazon.com and at big-box retailers including Best Buy and office supply chain Staples. Priced starting at $199 (16 GB of storage), the Kindle Fire HD features a 1,280 x 800-pixel HD display, Dolby audio, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, HD webcam for Skype calls, 11 hours of battery life, and streaming to movies and TV shows at Amazon Prime. Also available is an updated version of the existing Kindle Fire which is aggressively priced at $159. This non-HD model has 8 GB of storage, uses the same plastic shell and 7-inch display of the first-generation Kindle Fire but has 40% faster processor, twice the RAM (1GB), and longer battery life.

What Else You Need To Know

  • Only the 16 GB version of the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD is currently available; the 32GB version, priced at $249, will arrive October 25th.
  • Amazon's new wave of Android tablet includes the high-end 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD, which won't be available until November 20th. The device has an entry-level price of $499 for the model with support for ultrafast wireless standard 4G LTE, and starts at $299 for the Wi-Fi only version.
  • The 8.9-inch Kindle Fire cuts glare by 25% relative to the latest generation iPad and has a vivid and crisp 1920 x 1200 HD 254 ppi display -- in the same range as the 9.7-inch third generation iPad's 264 ppi Retina display.
