Apple broke tradition by launching a second full-sized iPad in one year, as well as a 7.9-inch iPad. The successor to the iPad three launched just seven months ago features an improved 4G LTE, a new Apple designed A6X chip that offers up to twice the CPU performance of previous model, a Lightning connector introduced with the iPhone 5, and an improved 720p HD front-facing camera. The new iPad 4, like its predecessor, has a 2,048 x 1,536 pixel Retina display on its 9.7-inch screen and an introductory price of $499. The iPad 4, marketed as "iPad with Retina Display", will be available for pre-order October 26th and will ship November 2nd.

- The Wi-Fi only iPad 4 is priced at $499 (16GB), $599 (32GB), and $699 (64GB). The model with 4G LTE or cellular connectivity comes at $629, $729 and $829, respectively.
- Apple also launched an iPad mini, which has a 7.9-inch screen, the same display resolution as the iPad 2, an introductory price of $329, and higher priced 4G LTE models.
- Contrary to speculations, Apple has not phased out the $399 iPad 2 despite the arrival of the iPad mini.
- Before Tuesday's launch, Apple only introduced one new iPad every year since 2010.
