Microsoft's 10-Inch Surface RT Tablet to Debut at Only $199?

Microsoft is releasing 10.6-inch Surface RT tablets - models running on Windows RT - for only $199, according to Engadget, citing an "inside source". Previously estimated to cost at least $600 apiece, the high-end Microsoft Surface RT tablet, should the source be correct, would be priced at the same level as the Google Nexus 7, the Amazon Kindle Fire and other budget 7-inch Android tablets, and 60% cheaper than the market leading iPad. Microsoft did not comment on the report but has previously said the new tablet will be priced comparably to other tablets with ARM processors.

What Else You Need To Know:

- Microsoft is releasing Windows 8, which is designed to work on smartphones, tablets and PCs, on Oct. 26. Windows RT is the Windows 8 version for ARM devices such as tablets.

- Microsoft and device-makers are releasing tablets that run on Windows RT and the full-blown Windows 8.
