Microsoft and Apple Reject Facebook Home
BGR

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg says Facebook Home is a custom overlay for phones -- Android handsets for the moment -- that bring people (and Facebook) rather than apps to the forefront of the smartphone. It appears like Facebook Home won't officially be heading to Apple mobile devices and Windows Phone handsets. Microsoft, which purchased a 1.6% equity stake in Facebook in 2007, says people should just purchase a Windows Phone instead of updating their Android phones, with Frank X. Shaw, Microsoft vice president of corporate communication, saying that Microsoft has been having a "people first" mantra has long been implemented in Windows Phones. As for Apple, the iPad and iPhone maker does not allow anyone to alter the iOS interface, and so, reports confirm, that Apple has rejected the idea of Facebook Home for its iOS devices. Zuckerberg said that Facebook has a great relationship with both Apple and Google but noted that Google's Android is just a more open system.

What Else You Need To Know

  • Developers creating tweaks for the Cydia app store may find a way to bring at least a theme that mimics Facebook Home on iOS based iphone and iPad.
  • Microsoft's Shaw says Thursday's Facebook Home announcement was "remarkably similar to the launch event we did for Windows Phone two years ago."
