Microsoft was late in the game in the lucrative tablets market but won't make the same mistake if smartwatches become mainstream. Sources tell The Wall Street Journal that Microsoft has been working with suppliers in Asia to acquire components for a wearable computing device with a 1.5-inch display. Microsoft pioneered wearable electronics when it released SPOT, also known as smart personal objects technology, way back in 2004.
What Else You Need To Know
- Microsoft's SPOT enabled devices like watches, desktop clocks, and even coffee makers to link up with MSN services through FM radio transmissions.
- Samsung has confirmed that it's working on a wearable computing device and other tech giants like Google and Apple, as well as LG, are rumored to be releasing smartwatches -- either as a standalone device or accessory to smartphones -- within a year or two.
- Despite modest success of smartwatch-like devices in the past, it appears that the biggest names in tech now believe that smart watches are the next big thing.
