Sony is releasing a tablet version to its well designed Xperia line of smartphones. The Japanese electronics giant hasn't unveiled the slate, but leaked press renders show a tablet that's thinner but keeps the curved, folded-edge design of the Sony Tablet S, last year's Sony slate that doesn't try to be an iPad clone. The leaked photos also show a new aluminum back with plastic edging. Visible icons include a Sony Walkman and imply an Android 4.0 or higher OS.
The Xperia Tablet is expected to have a Tegra 3 quad-core processor, a 9.4-inch 1280 x 800 display, an 8-megapixel rear camera, and 1-megapixel front camera for video calling. The tablet will likely have universal remote capabilities. Other expected specifications are up to 64GB of storage, WiFi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0 and 3G, along with GPS, SD card slot, and a 10-hour battery.
What Else You Need To Know:
- Sony is reportedly planning to unveil The Xperia tablet at the electronics trade show IFA 2012 in Berlin scheduled for Aug. 31 to Sept. 5. Lenovo and Samsung, among many device-makers, unveiled tablets at last year's IFA.
- The entry-level 16GB Xperia Tablet is expected to be priced at $449.99, which is $50 lower than the entry level third-generation iPad. The 64GB model will be available in shelves for $649.99.
- Previous leaked photos of the new tablet didn't have Xperia branding.
