Amid reports that Apple's new tablet is overheating, Consumer Reports brought the new iPad into a lab to perform a series of usage tests with a thermal imaging camera. During one test, running the game Infinity Blade II for 45 minutes, the popular non-profit publisher measured operating temperatures as high as 46° Celcius (116 degrees Fahrenheit). The warmest temperatures were concentrated around certain corners of the tablet.
While this temperature is 13° degrees Fahrenheit higher than the hottest temperatures measured on the iPad 2 and well above Apple's own thermal specifications, the report suggests that it caused no user discomfort.
Apple responded to the growing concern on Tuesday, stating that its new iPad operates “well within our thermal specifications.”
