Next Nexus 7 Said to be Only $99 But Has One-Core CPU
Other

The $199 Nexus 7 emerged as the best-selling Android tablet and is second only to the Apple iPad in the highly competitive tablet market. A Jelly Bean running tablet at half the price could even find more commercial success. Digitimes, citing unnamed Taiwan-based supply chain makers, reports that Google and Assu would be releasing a Nexus 7 with a $99 price tag in the fourth quarter. While the $199 Nexus 7 has a quad-core processor, the cheaper version would have an ARM-architecture single-core processor.

What Else You Need To Know

  • Digitimes' sources also say that the cheaper Nexus 7 would have a HUVA TN panel made by Taiwanese HannStar Display, and a processor developed by China-based WonderMedia Technologies, and assembly will be handled by Taiwan-based Quanta Computer.
  • The Nexus 7 tablet released Asus and Google in July has been lauded for its powerful quad-core processor, high resolution display, built-in NFC, and Jelly Bean operating system, but hit for its lack of an SD card and cellular connectivity.

Is a $99 Nexus tablet a viable reality and will it be worth using?

Assuming Google launch a $99 tablet, it is likely that other big names will try something similar. The problem is that once these devices get into the hands of consumers they will find that their expectations haven’t been met and this will irreparably damage the Android and Nexus brands.
