Nokia gets caught, then apologizes for faking Lumia PureView sample shots

Eagle-eyed viewers of the promo video for the recently unveiled Nokia Lumia 920 have discovered that the purported sample shots shown to demonstrate PureView's OIS (optical image stabilization) technology are actually fake, and were in fact recorded with professional camera equipment.

Pausing the promo video at 0:27 reveals the reflection of a man is inside a white van holding up a camera that looks big enough to be a DSLR. It is clear that this person is the one recording the faked sample footage. Shortly after this news story broke out, Nokia posted a public apology to its blog, Nokia Conversations

"Of course, hindsight is 20/20, but we should have posted a disclaimer stating this was a representation of OIS only. This was not shot with a Lumia 920. At least, not yet. We apologize for the confusion we created," said Nokia Spokesperson Heidi Lemmetyinen.

What Else You Need To Know

  • Nokia have also admitted that the sample photos in the video used to show the PureView camera's performance in low light are also "simulated" or, in other words, fake.
