Nokia CEO Throws iPhone During Live TV Interview

Nokia lost its dominance in the smartphone market after Apple unveiled the iPhone, so never flaunt one in front of Nokia's Stephen Elop, especially in Finland, Nokia's homeland. In an interview aired on live at the biggest Finnish commercial TV-station MTV3, the presenter asked Elop when he will release the Lumia 928, something that the Nokia chief did not confirm or deny because such product has not been announced. The host pressed on, showed his iPhone and said, "I want to have a Nokia phone" (implying that current Windows-running Lumia phones aren't as good." Elop responded, saying "Oh, how embarrassing," then snatched the device, and quickly threw it onto the floor. The video ends with Elop promising to replace the presenter's iPhone with his sought after "Nokia phone".

What Else You Need To Know

  • In its heyday, Nokia had a near-monopoly (90% market share) in its home country, but during the past two years, Android and Apple phones, like in most countries, have dominated the market.
  • Nokia's recent Windows phone offerings, the Lumia 800 and the Lumia 920, have shown better-than-expected results, helping the handset maker avert further decline in Finland.
