NVIDIA's Tegra 4i Brings Quad-Core Power to Cheap Phones
Into Mobile

NVIDIA announced the Tegra 4i, a compact version of the Tegra 4 that's designed to bring quad-core performance to mid-range phones. It doesn't offer the same graphical performance and the 3200 x 1200 maximum screen resolution touted by the Tegra 4, which is designed for superphones and phablets. Notwithstanding, the 4i is still extremely powerful -- it touts 60 graphics cores versus the 12 of the Tegra 3, and inherits the high dynamic range photography and video engine of the Tegra 4. The 4i supports a maximum screen resolution of still eye-popping 1920 x 1200 pixels, includes battery-saver core, and has an integrated LTE (4G) chip.

What Else You Need To Know

  • Nvidia also announced a smartphone reference design called Phoenix, a 5-inch, 1080p reference, Tegra 4i-powered Android smartphone that builders can use as a starting point.

I understand, a budget chip may not sound like the most exciting thing in the world on paper, but remember - NVIDIA's budget Kai tablet platform is what the Nexus 7 owes its existence to. - David Ruddock, Android Police
[I]t's at the lower end, performance-wise – and so cheaper - yet is still designed to support 1080p Full HD and 4G LTE capable handsets; a specially optimised version of the Nvidia i500 LTE modem is included in the design. - Dan Grabham , TechRadar
