New Qualcomm Tech Cuts Charging Time by 75%, Wakes Phone by Voice
Engadget

San Diego-based chip maker Qualcomm unveiled a new technology that promises to cut mobile device charging times by as much as 75 percent. After touting its new powerful but battery saving quad-core chips last month, Qualcomm has announced Quick Charge 2.0, as well as Voice Activation, which allows Snapdragon 800-powered hardware to implement a very low-power voice recognition system that can run in standby mode. Snapdragon 800, which is already designed to consume little power, will have Quick Charge 2.0. Qualcomm expects devices and chargers with 2.0 support to hit shelves purchase by early 2014.

What Else You Need To Know

  • While Quick Charge 2.0 requires an optimized charger and is baked into the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, it's not exclusive to Qualcomm-based hardware or small devices as it could drive even laptops demanding up to 60W of energy.
  • Qualcomm unveiled at the CES its new Snapdragon 800 processors, which feature IZat location technology, UltraHD video and quad Krait 400 cores at up to 2.3 GHz each.
  • Qualcomm says that there are currently more than 55 Snapdragon 800-powered devices being developed, with the hardware expected to begin hitting store shelves in the second half of 2013.
  • Last year, more than 70 devices launched with Quick Charge 1.0, which enables the devices to charge up to 40% faster.
  • Quick Charge 1.0 and 2.0 products and chargers can be used interchangeably, but to get the full benefit of Quick Charge 2.0, users will need to use a 2.0 device with a 2.0 charger.
