Rogers and CIBC team up for BlackBerry-powered mobile payments
CrackBerry

Rogers and CIBC have just made history by completing Canada's very first mobile credit card transaction with the use of two NFC-enabled BlackBerry smartphones. The event, which took place inside a Tim Horton's in Toronto, was made possible with a BlackBerry Bold 9900 and a BlackBerry Curve 9360, both of which feature NFC wireless technology. CIBC Senior Executive VP and Group Head of Retail and Business Banking DavidWilliamson was present at the event, as was Rogers VP of Emerging Business David Robinson, and Olympic Triathlete and medalist Simon Whitfield. This is part of an ongoing program first announced several months ago to kickstart mobile credit card payment adoption in Canada.

What Else You Need To Know

  • As part of the program, smartphone users will be able to access existing CIBC credit cards and pay for stuff at the checkout counter while earning loyalty rewards at the same time.
  • The mobile payment feature is said to be on its way to Android and iOS smartphones in the future.
