Samsung Galaxy S4 Said to Tout Eye-Based Scrolling

Samsung's upcoming flagship, the Galaxy S IV, has impressive hardware, but its software will have far more ground-breaking features, a Samsung employee told The New York Times. One of the software enhancements for the Android Jelly Bean-running phone is an eye-tracking technology that enables users to scroll through webpages without touching the screen, said the unnamed employee, who claims to be in possession of an S4. For example, when users read documents or web pages and their eyes reach the bottom of the page, the software will automatically scroll down to reveal more paragraphs. Samsung is slated to unveil the Galaxy S4 at the Samsung Unpacked 2013 event in New York on March 14th.

What Else You Need To Know

  • Last year's Galaxy S3 featured intuitive and clever technologies not built into the Android framework, including Smart Stay, which tracks a user's eyes and turn off whenever the person is not looking at the screen.
  • The highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy S IV is expected to feature a 4.99-inch HD Super AMOLED display, a 1.8GHz Exynos 5 eight-core processor, and a 13-MP camera.
  • Samsung has already filed two trademarks for the eye-tracking software, with "Eye Scroll" being the European designation, and "Samsung Eye Scroll" as the name in the U.S.
