Samsung has just announced that it is rolling out a free software update that will enable existing Galaxy S III LTE smartphones to work with Voice-over-LTE or VoLTE network services such as what was recently launched by MetroPCS.
VoLTE service compability is going to become available first for users of the Samsung Galaxy S III LTE in South Korea this month and then for the rest of the world some time later this year.
Because the Samsung Galaxy S III LTE already has the LTE network chip in place, there is no need for Samsung to release new hardware.
Thus, a software update is all that's necessary to "activate" the feature.
What Else You Need To Know:
- Voice-over-LTE or VoLTE is an advanced IP packet-based communications technology that offers enhanced service quality and improved overall performance over preceding networking technologies such as 2.5G and 3G.
- Samsung claims that the Galaxy S III LTE is the first VoLTE-enabled smartphone in the world, but in reality, that distinction belongs to the LG Connect 4G, which was recently unveiled as part of the MetroPCS VoLTE services launching.
