Sony Ramps Up Tablet S with Quad-Core Chips, Metal Build, Xperia Brand
TN

Sony introduced at the IFA 2012 -- and will release September 7th -- the Xperia Tablet S, the successor to the magazine-shaped tablets it launched last year. The new device is splash-proof, and has a powerful quad-core Tegra 3 processor, a 9.4-inch 1,280 x 800 IPS display, and unique hardware features like an infrared emitter for controlling other devices, Sony's own ClearAudio+ technology, and a full-sized SD card slot. The Xperia tablet will retail in the U.S. for $399 for a 16GB Wi-Fi only version and $599 for a 64GB model.

What Else You Need To Know

  • The Xperia Tablet S borrows the same curved, futuristic design of its predecessor, although this time it has a solid metal build, is lighter (only 570 grams) and thinner.
  • Other specs of the Xperia Tablet S include Android 4.0.3 ICS operating system, Bluetooth 3.0, WiFi and 3G connectivity, an 8MP rear camera, a 1MP HD web camera in front, and a 6000 mAh unit battery (10 hours of browsing).

Swishing through home screens and web browsing barely troubled NVIDIA's quad-core processor, and we managed to reach a browser benchmark score of 1,884 ms on SunSpider, putting it in a decent place for an initial show floor model. - Matt Smith, engadget
Sony appears to be hoping that features, rather than the hardware itself, are what will really differentiate the Xperia S: The new tablet builds on the universal remote-control function of the previous model by adding the ability to create macros, so that multiple devices can be programmed to turn on or off with a single button push. - James K.
