All About Symbian

Sony's newest tablet, the Xperia Tablet S, is already available in the U.S. starting at $399.99, which is $100 cheaper than the entry level iPad 3. The magazine shaped Android tablet has a 9.4-inch touchscreen, a powerful NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, an infrared emitter for controlling other Sony devices, and a full-sized SD card slot. The device is splash-proof and has instant access to Sony's Playstation certified games, Music Unlimited, Movies Unlimited and more from Sony's digital portfolio. Pricing are $399, $499 and $599 for the 16, 32 and 64 GB version of the Sony tablet.

What Else You Need To Know

  • Measuring a skinny 8.8 mm, the Xperia Tablet S is more compact than its predecessor and now uses a lightweight aluminum design instead of plastic.
  • The tablet also features an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, 1GB of RAM, an 8MP rear-facing camera, a 1MP front-facing camera for video calls, and battery life of up to 12 hours.
  • The keyboard cover is sold separately for $99.
  • Drawbacks include a so-so 1280 x 800 resolution when many Android tablets are offering 1920 x 1200 pixels; and the entry level price of $399, which is twice the price of the more popular 7-inch Amazon Kindle Fire HD and the Nexus 7.
