Video reveals a hidden Nexus 7 “Smart Cover” Feature
Android Police

Is Google’s Nexus 7 magnetic feature copied from Apple’s iPad?

Just as the Nexus 7 made its debut, a controversial YouTube clip surfaced that could spell trouble for Google. The video features a curious user revealing a seemingly hidden feature of the Nexus 7. When a magnet is placed on the bottom left corner, the tablet tucks into sleep mode. This is very similar to Apple’s patented Smart Cover feature.

Does this mean Google and ASUS (maker of the Nexus 7 tablet) will be busy preparing a patent infringement suit?

Maybe not. According to David Ruddock from Android Police, Apple’s Smart Cover patent seems to be specific to the iPad.

"There is talk of "useful functionality" being added by the cover, but based on the patent language, that seems to still fall only within Apple's particular design and mechanism - not in general. So, it's entirely possible (even likely) Google and ASUS's design here isn't sufficiently similar to infringe - but we don't know."
